Lawmakers on Monday cited the Department of Transportation’s (DOTr’s) implementation of the student train fare exemption, saying it serves as a financial relief to Filipino families.
Quezon City Rep. Alfred Vargas and Marino party-list Rep. Carlo “Sandro” Gonzalez thanked DOTr Secretary Art Tugade for implementing the pro-people program, even before the signing into law of the proposed Student Fare Discount Act.
“I thank DoTr and Secretary Art Tugade for heeding Congress’ call for fare discounts. They exceeded our expectations by exempting students from train and light rail fares and from terminal fees at airports and piers,” Vargas, one of the principal authors of the proposed Student Fare Discount Act which has yet to be signed by President Duterte, said as the free train rides started July 1.
Students are entitled to ride the MRT-3, LRT-2, and Philippine National Railways (PNR) for free at select hours on weekdays, except holidays starting July 1, the DOTr had earlier announced.
It said the students will be exempted from paying seaport terminal fees starting July 16 and airport terminal fees starting August 1.
“Foregone revenues from the student fare and terminal fee exemptions are not an economic loss because that is at least P130 million in savings of Filipino families which they can spend on other priorities,” Vargas said.
Vargas reminded the students to secure the specific ID needed for long-term availment of the train and light rail discounts.
“All students should always have their student IDs with them to avail of the discounts. All the more reason not to forget those IDs at home,” Vargas said.
