Rep Alfred Vargas seeks another term, files COC for QC 5th District Representative
TWO-term Quezon City Rep. Alfred Vargas has filed his Certificate of Candidacy at the Commission on Elections (Comelec) for Representative of Quezon City 5th District.
Vargas, one of the prolific members of the 16th and 17th Congress, is seeking his third and final term as Congressman under the banner of PDP-Laban with vision and mission of providing meaningful service to his constituents.
“Service always begins from the heart. Ang sarap maglingkod kapag dama mo ang pagmamahal ng mga pinaglilingkuran mo,” Vargas said.
The youngest Congressman in Quezon City, Vargas is among the top ten solons that have the most number of bills filed in the House of Representatives. At present he already filed 319 measures and resolutions, both with local and national importance.
During his term, he has passed 20 Republic Acts including RA 10931 Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act, RA 10645 mandating PhilHealth coverage for all senior citizens, RA 10747 Rare Diseases Act of the Philippines; RA 19644 or An Act promoting job generation and inclusive growth through the development of micro, small and medium enterprises; RA 10667 or the Philippine Competition Act; RA 10679 or the Youth Entrepreneurship Act; RA 10687 or the Unified Student Financial Assistance System for Tertiary Education (UniFAST) Act and many others.
Born on October 24, 1981, this son of Alfredo Vargas Jr. and Susana Dumlao-Vargas earned his degree in AB Management Economics in Ateneo de Manila Univerity. He also went to the University of the Philippines Diliman to pursue a master’s degree in public administration.
While he begun his career in showbiz as a multi-awarded actor, Vargas passion is also into public service.
“While I was doing quite well acting in films and on television during my younger years, I felt the urge to do more for the others and be part of positive change , I knew I could do more meaningful things,” he said.
His political career turn very colorful and successful as he is the first ever Congressman of the 5th District of Quezon. Before becoming member of the Lower House, Vargas first joined elections in 2010 where he was elected as city councilor in 2nd District and despite being neophyte, he got the second highest number of votes in the district.
In 2013 he won as Congressman for the newly-created 5th District beating veteran and well-off politicians in the city.
In 2016, he ran again for second term and this time unopposed. But while he has no opponent, he still managed to get 85 percent of the votes.
According to Vargas, he will continue serving the people with the goal of helping them improve their lives.
In the Congress, he pursues measures on education, health, poverty alleviation, job opportunities and sports development.
Being Vice Chairman of the House appropriations committee, he defended the budget of the housing related agencies particularly the National Housing Authority (NHA). He is also members of at least 13 House committees.
One of his visions is to help government provide decent houses for the poor Filipinos.
Pending for Congress approval are Vargas pet bills the Tulong Trabaho Bill and the Work From Home Bill, both aimed to provide job opportunities to the Filipinos.
As a public servant, Vargas received awards and citations that include 2013 MWWF Gintong Palad Award for Public Service; 2012 and 2013 Most Outstanding City Councilor, Manuel L. Quezon Bantayog Award; Special Award for Excellence in Public Service for 2012, Aliw Award Foundation Inc; Gintong Kabataan Award, Bulacan Outstanding Youth Achievement Award, 2008; Outstanding Surigaonon Award for Theater and Arts, Rotary Club, 2007
